Best Places to Propose on the Amalfi Coast: Positano, Ravello, Praiano & Beyond

At 19:40 on a September evening the sun has already slipped behind the ridge above Fornillo, and Positano turns the colour of the inside of a shell: pink stucco, green-and-yellow majolica on the dome, a sea gone flat and silver. Nobody squints, nobody has a shadow across their face. That is the moment we wait for with a ring in someone’s pocket.

This guide covers the best places to propose on the Amalfi Coast from a photographer’s point of view: which way each spot faces, when the light is kind, which villas need a ticket and where a boat beats every terrace. It is what we would tell a friend.

Positano: Spiaggia Grande at sunset, the classic place to propose on the Amalfi Coast

Positano’s main beach is the postcard. Walk to the end of the pier, turn round, and the whole town climbs the slope with the majolica dome of Santa Maria Assunta at its centre. In summer the sand is a carpet of sunbeds until about 18:30; then the beach clubs pack up and it empties.

Positano faces east, so it loses direct sun by mid-afternoon in summer. Far from a drawback: from 18:00 you get an hour of soft, shadowless light while the sky over Li Galli turns apricot. Propose on the pier, or on the wet sand at the eastern end.

Best time: 18:30–20:00, June to September; quiet by 17:00 in October. Photographer’s tip: for the classic dome-and-amphitheatre frame we climb to the stairways off Via Cristoforo Colombo, Sponda side, at dawn.

Positano: Via Positanesi d’America, the path to Fornillo

From the western end of Spiaggia Grande a paved path cuts along the cliff toward Fornillo beach. This is Via Positanesi d’America: ten minutes on foot, with the squat Torre Trasita halfway along. It gives you what the beach cannot: height, and Positano behind you with sea in the foreground.

The path is narrow, so we scout a widening near the tower where you can stop without blocking anyone. Foot traffic thins after 19:00, once the swimmers have climbed back to town, and the sun drops toward Capri. It is our favourite place in Positano to propose.

Best time: the last 40 minutes before sunset, or 07:00–08:00 when the path is empty. Photographer’s tip: lean on the chest-high walls and let us drop below your eyeline so the sea fills the frame.

Praiano: the sunset side of the coast

West of Capo Sottile the coast turns to face the sunset, and Praiano keeps the sun until it drops into the sea. The heart is Piazza San Gennaro, a terrace of painted majolica in front of the church, with the tiled dome and the bay toward Positano and Capri below. No ticket; at 19:00 in June it holds a few residents and two or three couples.

Down at Marina di Praia the Torre a Mare stands at the mouth of the inlet; the path around it is quieter still. Praiano is also a calmer base than Positano, on the SITA line.

Best time: 18:30–20:15 in June and July; 17:30–18:45 in late September. Photographer’s tip: we set you at the low wall toward the sea so the dome and Positano’s skyline both sit behind you.

Ravello: Villa Cimbrone and the Terrazza dell’Infinito

Some 350 metres above the sea, Ravello has cooler air and a slower pace. Villa Cimbrone’s gardens end at the Terrazza dell’Infinito, a long belvedere lined with marble busts where the balustrade drops straight into the view over the Gulf of Salerno.

It is the coast’s most photographed proposal spot, and it is ticketed, with professional photography regulated. We contact the villa before every proposal here — check the current rules before you go. The terrace faces south-east, so the sea is lit from morning; by late afternoon the sun is behind you and the coast toward Maiori glows.

Best time: the first hour after opening, before groups arrive, or the last hour before closing. Photographer’s tip: stand between two busts, not at the centre; it keeps other visitors out of the frame.

Ravello: Villa Rufolo

Villa Rufolo, on Piazza Duomo, steps down through Moorish-Norman courtyards to a garden over the sea. The famous frame is from the lower garden: two palms, a bed of flowers and the twin domes of the Annunziata church against the sea, the view that moved Wagner in 1880. It is ticketed and busier than Cimbrone.

Personal photography is allowed; a professional shoot needs permission, which we request ahead — check the current rules before you go. Propose at the balustrade of the lower terrace, then use the cloister and the tower for the portraits; their shade is a relief in July.

Best time: 09:00–10:30, when light rakes across the domes from the east and the garden is quiet. Photographer’s tip: from the upper garden a longer lens lines the domes up with the coast at Minori.

Fiordo di Furore

Between Praiano and Conca dei Marini the coast road crosses a slit in the cliff on a stone bridge some 30 metres up. Steps drop to the Fiordo di Furore: a pebble beach the size of a tennis court and green water between rock walls.

The fjord sits in shadow most of the day and the sun only reaches the beach around midday: the one spot on this list we would send you to at noon. The other angle is from the bridge, the two of you small below. No parking on the bridge; come by SITA bus, or park at Conca dei Marini and walk.

Best time: 12:00–14:00 for light on the beach; October to April it is empty and the water clearest. Photographer’s tip: we shoot from the far end of the beach, bridge arching overhead; the rock’s scale makes the frame.

Sentiero degli Dei, the Path of the Gods

The Path of the Gods runs from Bomerano, in Agerola, down to Nocelle above Positano: just under eight kilometres, mostly downhill, the sea far below. If you both like walking, nothing on the coast comes close.

The trail faces west and south-west, so afternoon light is glorious and July heat brutal; in summer we set off by 08:00 and reach the viewpoints over Positano and Li Galli in soft light. We scout a terrace on the second half the day before, so nobody improvises with a ring on a ledge. From Nocelle some 1,500 steps drop to Arienzo, or a local bus runs to Positano.

Best time: April–June and late September–October; start early or finish at golden hour, never midday in summer. Photographer’s tip: trail shoes for both of you, plus a change of shoes for the portraits.

Amalfi’s cathedral steps and Atrani at dawn

Amalfi’s Duomo di Sant’Andrea tops a steep, wide flight of steps, striped black and white under a gold mosaic. At 10:00 the piazza is a bus tour; at 06:30 it is yours, a barman rolling up a shutter. Propose on the upper steps (the cathedral is a place of worship, so we stay outside), then walk ten minutes east through the tunnel to Atrani.

Atrani has one square, Piazza Umberto I, under the arches of the coast road, the dome of Santa Maria Maddalena above and a beach beneath the viaduct. No beach clubs, a handful of trattorie, washing over the lane: the antidote to Positano.

Best time: 06:15–08:30, May to September, before the first ferries dock. Photographer’s tip: in Amalfi we shoot from the fountain with a longer lens so the striped arches fill the frame; in Atrani, the church steps give height over the piazza.

A private boat toward Li Galli

If you would rather be alone, take a boat. Gozzi, the traditional wooden boats, charter from Positano, Praiano and Amalfi; the classic sunset route runs out to Li Galli. Anchor in the lee of Gallo Lungo with the coast behind you and propose on the bow.

No crowd, no permit, and the skipper is in on it. We come aboard as the photographer “the charter included”, or follow in a second boat. At sunset the sea reflects the sky and lifts the shadows under your eyes. Boats run reliably from April to October. Capri is under an hour away; see our Capri and Sorrento proposal guide.

Best time: the last 90 minutes before sunset, June to September; mornings are calmer if you get seasick. Photographer’s tip: wear something that moves in the wind; leave hats in the bag, they shade the face.

Practical notes

• Getting there: train from Rome to Naples or Salerno, then ferry (April to October) to Amalfi or Positano, or train to Sorrento and the SITA bus.
• Crowds and seasons: Positano’s beach and Amalfi’s Piazza Duomo are busiest 10:30–17:30 in July and August; April–May and September–October are the sweet spot.
• Driving: the SS163 is slow, parking is scarce, both towns have ZTL zones and the coast road has had peak-season limits on non-resident cars; check the current rules before you go.
• Permits: only the Ravello villas charge admission and regulate professional photography; beaches, piazzas, paths and boats need nothing.
